After receiving hundreds of requests from students, professionals, art libraries and my collectors around the globe, I feel duty bound to share my joy and enthusiasm about painting with all of you. This is my first D V D and I have chosen my life long love affair with the sea and sailing as my subject matter. There exist in the world's greatest museums many thousands of wonderful seascapes. I have traveled in my art career from the Far East to Alaska and across the European continent including the birthplace of my Dutch ancestors. On my maternal side, the Pierce family were ship builders that financed early voyages to America in the sixteen hundreds. Somehow I believe my love for the sea and painting is hereditary. After studying great masters of the seascape as well as American, Winslow Homer I have decided on a different tack. My work falls loosely into the category of contemporary impressionism. And I have distain for the academic painters of the sea that rely on a formula to create waves that too often fail to have spirit or motion. No two waves ever match and those infinite variations that occur are what my work is about. In my demonstration I have used turbulent waters to show the awesome power confronted by the yachtsmen. The compositional considerations and color selections are tackled from my first stroke of the brush. The opposition from ship to sea is my immediate concern and I hammer at this point for the viewer. Hopefully it will empower the fledging or seasoned artist to reach that magical moment when their painting looks like its ready to sail from the easel to a place of honor in a home, gallery or museum.
