HOW TO PAINT YOUTUBE PAINTING CLASSES STUDYING YOUR VALUES IS YOUR KEY TO SUCCESS Before you begin to paint, regardless of your subject matter, look hard and see how many value changes you can find that will help you paint your picture. Study how things appear and it can be your key to success in your painting. One example of value change can be seen very easily, yet so often overlooked. A simple telephone pole may appear lighter than the background but the top is often seen very dark against the sky. This may seem like a minor consideration but the whole painting process is based on your ability to get your values right. Notice how most everything you observe appears in this same way. Tree branches may appear light in one part of a painting yet very dark as they reach skyward. A vision I remember as a beginning painter was looking out across Ontario Lake. It was a magnificent discovery to see the horizon line actually reverse itself from one end of the horizon to the other. The water's edge appeared black at one edge of the horizon and gradually became very light at the other.

Ten Step Linear Grayscale - How to make a Munsell grayscale and then apply the concept to observing still life objects.

How to paint a cube through applying the concept of value. Learn how to observe the value within the relationships of positive and negative space -- foreground, middleground and background!

Learn how to paint and observe the multiple value bands and transitions of value that enable a cylinder to have curvature and look three-dimensional.

Learn how to paint a sphere through being taught how to simplify the areas of high-middle and low-key values in to spots or zones.

Using styrofoam forms for models works very well. They can be purchased at ACMoore or Michaels Arts and Crafts Stores.

Simple metal clip-on lights work very well to illuminate the forms. The light can be attached to your easel or other piece of furniture. The forms themselves can be placed within a cardboard box that is painted gray #5 - middle value.

A synthetic sable brush can be used to softly blend bands of value together to give the forms a realistic sense of curvature and depth. A bristle brush may be used for this technique, too.
